HPE Morpheus Software

HPE Morpheus is a hybrid cloud management platform that unifies provisioning, automation, governance, and now observability for VMs, containers, and clouds under one per-socket subscription. It pairs with HPE Morpheus VM Essentials, a KVM-based hypervisor, so you get a credible VMware alternative and a single control plane to run both side by side.

It is a functional one for most day-to-day virtualization: live migration, high availability, live storage migration, and workload balancing all ship on Ubuntu-based KVM with QEMU, libvirt, and Open vSwitch underneath. Morpheus manages VMware and VM Essentials in the same console, so you keep vSphere running while VM Essentials takes on new workloads, no forced cutover.

Advanced is a new mid-tier introduced with Morpheus v9.0. Essentials covers straightforward VM management without container orchestration. Advanced adds containers, Kubernetes, and software-defined networking on top of VMs. Enterprise adds full multi-tenancy, complete automation frameworks (Ansible, Chef, Puppet), and zero-trust micro-segmentation for the largest, most complex estates.

VM Essentials lists at roughly $742 per socket for a 1-year term, scaling to about $3,701 per socket over 5 years, with a 60-day free trial for up to 6 sockets. Enterprise is quoted per-socket for on-prem deployments or as a managed subscription; AWS Marketplace lists a 12-month managed contract with premium support at $198,500 for 1,000 workload-license-equivalents. HPE is also running a free-year Essentials-plus-Zerto offer for VMware customers actively migrating.

AstraZeneca cut server build times from roughly 80 hours to about 20 minutes and documented more than $6 million in savings after standardizing on Morpheus. HPE separately cites self-service provisioning that is up to 150x faster than manual processes and up to 30% lower cloud spend from unified cost analytics and budget guardrails.

Morpheus Central is a GreenLake-delivered control point for organizations running more than one Morpheus deployment, across sites, business units, or as a service provider. It gives one view of health, inventory, and workload status across every environment and lays the groundwork for centralized governance. Single-site deployments do not need it.

HPE Zerto Software integrates for continuous data protection and live migration straight out of VMware environments.

Morpheus provisions, virtualizes, and governs your hybrid estate, the control plane that builds and runs it. OpsRamp is observability and AIOps: monitoring health, correlating events, and automating remediation. HPE increasingly ties the two together through GreenLake Intelligence, but they solve different problems and many organizations run both.
