Juniper Session Smart SD-WAN

The solution combines the Session Smart Router (SSR) hardware or software, Marvis AI, and Juniper WAN Assurance. The SSR runs Secure Vector Routing to provide the tunnel-free fabric and built-in security, while Marvis AI and WAN Assurance deliver cloud management, telemetry, and AIOps across every site from Mist Cloud.

Instead of building and orchestrating a mesh of IPsec tunnels, the SSR creates a secure, session-based fabric using Secure Vector Routing. This removes tunnel overhead to cut latency and improve bandwidth efficiency, simplifies scaling to thousands of sites, and applies Zero Trust per session instead of trusting everything inside a tunnel.

The SSR120 and SSR130 (SSR100-Line) suit small and medium branches. The SSR400 and SSR440 (SSR400-Line), including -C cellular variants with 5G/LTE, add PoE+ and higher port density for medium branches and retail. The SSR1200 through SSR1500 (SSR1000-Line) are 1U appliances built for large branch, data center, and campus hub sites, scaling from roughly 2.5 Gbps to 50 Gbps of encrypted throughput. The SSR operates deny-by-default, authenticating and authorizing each session before traffic flows and validating sessions hop-by-hop with hypersegmentation across the fabric. Its built-in NGFW and FIPS 140-2 certified design provide a direct path to SASE, including a documented best-of-breed integration with Zscaler's Zero Trust Exchange managed from Mist Cloud.

It layers three functions onto the base stateful firewall: URL filtering to block access to specific sites, IDS/IPS to stop advanced intrusion attempts, and per-application antivirus scanning for protocols like HTTP, FTP, and email. It runs on the same Secure Vector Routing engine, so there is no separate security appliance to deploy at the branch.

Juniper's published solution brief on the Zscaler integration cites bandwidth savings of 30 to 50 percent and OpEx reductions as high as 85 percent versus traditional tunnel-based architectures, driven by eliminating tunnel overhead and consolidating branch hardware into one platform.
